The proliferation of smartphones and the increased use of data have made it easier than ever to rack up huge communications bills while traveling overseas, even on a short trip.

When I travelled to Shanghai last month, I bought my Ooma with me. It's got my home number and it's free for life i.e. no more monthly bills. You get to receive and call anywhere in the US for free too. Only paid ~$200 for the device and it has already paid off the cost.

So while I was in Shanghai, I made calls via Ooma from my hotel and people were thinking I was calling them from US because it has my US phone number. Plus the sound quality was really good too.

I got charged one time when I called and the phone never connected, it just rang a couple times and I hung up. I was really pissed about that.
