Obsolete 1950s computer code is causing unemployment chaos amid huge lines: Appeal for retired programmers who know obscure code to fix outdated COBOL computer system in states across US

Antiquated mainframes. Goes back to the punch card days. A lot of insurance companies and some aspects of the Big 3 STILL use COBOL, a language that most programmers don’t know how to use. I’m sure there’s many others. And Why? Too expensive and time consuming to update to a new system/language. Oops. You’d think you’d want your IT/CS staff to understand the friggin language their software is written in?
